Burrell wants more technical training for refs
published: Sunday | October 16, 2005

BURRELL

SENIOR CARIBBEAN Football Union (CFU) vice-president Captain Horace Burrell, has called on football associations to involve referees in their developmental plans.

"I would like to see more technology brought into play," Burrell said at Thursday night's St. Elizabeth Football Association Annual Presentation of Awards Ceremony and Dinner at the Chariots Hotel in Leeds.

The former president of the Jamaica Football Federation added Peter Prendergast, president of Jamaica's Referees' Association (JRA), was working towards that.

"I would like the administrations to go a little further by organising tools which will demonstrate to a referee when a mistake is made simple video," he said.

Burrell said referees were only human and mistakes would be made.

"But what is important is for the organisations to organise a system wherein when a referee makes a mistake, it can be pointed out.

"The challenge I am throwing out to the organisations and administrations is to put a system in place where referees can be shown through video clippings and sessions where mistakes are made. Then they can correct their mistakes and move on and become better referees," Burrell said.

MISTAKES

Burrell, who is also an executive member of CANCACAF said he is not in the business of disrespecting referees but "I am in the business of saying to the administrators, you have a responsibility to ensure that the mistakes made by referees are duly corrected, that is simply my message," he said while reminding them of the several FIFA referees Jamaica produced.

"We have a legacy and I would like us to protect and preserve this legacy by ensuring that our referees are properly equipped at all times, both with the knowledge and that they have a very important role to play in the development of Jamaica's football," he said.

He also called on past players to become referees. Burrell said next season he would like to see new and additional referees and current referees getting more exposure .

The head of the Caribbean Football Union Marketing Division, Burrell said he will use his powers to get Jamaican referees in international or regional tournaments.

LOOKING OUT FOR REFEREES

"Where I sit at the CONCACAF and CFU level I am always looking out for my referees," he said.

"I sit there and say my Jamaican referees must not be left behind.

"I will continue to do all I can to assist our referees in reaching the highest level of their career they can."

The football executive, who also serves on several FIFA disciplinary committees, hinted that Prendergast was in line for a second consecutive appearance at the World Cup.

"The list has not yet been published, but based on what I have been told, his chances are as good as anyone else who will be going to Germany next year," he said.
