Let sleeping dogs lie!
published: Wednesday | October 19, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

DEVON DICK is suggesting that the Maroons should apologise, but what for? Something their ancestors did under trying circumstances over a century ago. We must get on with our lives and solve our current problems, rather than dredging up historic wrongs. If they did apologise, what difference would it make?

Going after companies that benefited from slavery and are still in operation makes sense, but an apology from one person who bore no blame to one who suffered no detriment is useless symbolism.

Should the descendants of a criminal meet with the descendants of the victim and apologise each generation? Will the next generation of Maroons be required to apologise again to the next generation of non-Maroons? And how will it be handled with children of mixed heritage?

Don't we have enough problems without opening this archaic can of worms?

I am, etc.,
