THE EDITOR, Sir:
I READ with interest Chris Tufton's proposals on corruption. Articles like those make one feel wary about politics, for I would wager a bet that few if any of those proposals will be implemented when the JLP gains power - if they do.
The political game is going to be as follows:
(1) The new JLP Government will say it needs time to sort out the many problems it inherited and at any rate the PNP had 15 years and did not solve this or that problem so PNP spokespersons must shut up.
(2) At its mid-term when reports of corruption begin to emerge about the JLP, when they begin to feast, they will tell the PNP that what they (the JLP) are doing is pale compared to what they (the PNP) did so they have no moral authority to comment.
(3) When it is time to face the electorate if the matter of corruption is on the agenda (as it is likely to be with the hungry JLP just back in power), the argument is going to be that they will tackle corruption as a matter of urgency - if re-elected and they will do in 4+1 or 5+1 years, what the PNP did not do in 15, and on and on, and the jackass will bray and the dogs will bark and the poor will suffer more.
Politics has largely been an abuse of power in Jamdown - really jammed down!
I am, etc.,
