THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM responding to a letter of October 17, 2005 regarding 'Sex on the Sabbath'. I must hasten to say that the Word did say 'by consent', which implies that both partners have to agree. The response given by the reader gives proof to the fact that for years the church has been 'colouring' sex red. The church makes people feel as if sex is nasty and should only be done sparingly. Sex was made by God. Are we implying that God would make something nasty?
If there should be no sex on the Sabbath, then that means that all the other restrictions that apply to the Sabbath should apply as well, like not lighting a fire (Ex. 35:3); travelling for 3/4 mile, which is a Sabbath's day journey (Ac. 1:12); or carrying a load (Ne. 13:15). As a matter of fact, if one should break the Sabbath, the penalty would be death as a man was once caught gathering wood on the Sabbath and God commanded Moses to have the assembly stone him to death (Nu. 15:32-36).
Therefore the question is, are we supposed to follow everything that is in the Old Testament? I am sure that the Bible said that God nailed those ordinances to the cross because it was too strict for Christians to follow. That is why the Lord came and made changes to the Sabbath and broadened our vision of what the Sabbath should be. After all, the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. This does not mean doing our own thing but we should not put ourselves in bondage.
As for sex on the Sabbath, I say if the urge comes, go ahead; it will be the most 'blessed' sex you could ever have. The marriage bed is undefiled. Let us remember that.
I am, etc.,
