Get civilised, Jamaica
published: Thursday | October 20, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I CAME to Jamaica years ago and fell in love with an illusion. I wanted nothing more than to spend my life here. Then my dream came true and I got to see Jamaica for what it really is, not just a vacation spot.

What I have experienced here is unimaginable. I feel such a love for Jamaica but also, 'God help me', a hatred for the condition of this country. I came here as a guest and have been robbed by gunmen, nearly raped, bribed by policemen (numerous times), used and scammed by Jamaicans posing as so-called friends, not to mention the risks I face by the driving conditions. I don't understand why it is the way it is here? Lack of self-respect? Lack of self-pride?

Whatever it is, I want to move on from here. I predict another Haiti. Jamaica, get civilised for God's sake. Change your ways or the tourists will change their destination.

I am, etc.,
