THE UNIVERSITY of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, was on Wednesday evening still making last-minute attempts to allow students who were scheduled to be deregistered from the institution to continue their course of studies.
These students failed to meet the September 30 deadline for the payment of tuition fees.
Joe Pereira, deputy principal of the UWI, told The Gleaner that the vice chancellor of the university, Professor Nigel Harris, donated $60,000 for six students who owed $10,000 or less in fees.
17 TURNED OUT
Richard Toomer, president of the Guild of Students at the UWI, had sent out an advisory informing students who were experiencing difficulty to contact the offices of the guild on Wednesday. He, however, told The Gleaner that only about 17 students turned out.
"It is rather unfortunate that our students are not concerned for their own interest, they need to care more for their own well-being," Mr. Toomer said.
Mr. Pereira said the remaining 300 full-time and 203 part-time students who have outstanding tuition fees would have known their fate by yesterday.
