THE JAMAICA Public Service (JPS) has donated $1.63 million to the University of the West Indies to assist eleven students who were facing the possibility of deregistration.
Frank 'Tony' Ray, director of external affairs at JPS, made the presentation to Professor Kenneth Hall, principal of the UWI Mona campus, last Friday.
"The funding of the scholarship for the students shows the commitment of JPS in responding to the dire needs of those in the society as well as its eagerness to strengthen the education system," said Mr. Ray, after handing over the commitment letter to Professor Kenneth Hall at the Conference Room of the Senate Building.
In response Professor Hall said, "We are delighted that JPS has been so generous in making available resources ... to assist the UWI in achieving its objectives of making high quality education available to a wide range of students."
Richard Toomer, president of the UWI Guild of Undergraduates, welcomed the donation as timely, noting it came at a time when over 400 students at the institution were likely to be deregistered because of the serious financial problems which they were facing.
