All public schools to remain closed today
published: Friday | October 21, 2005

THE MINISTRY of Education, Youth and Culture has advised parents, teachers and other stakeholders in education that all public schools will remain closed today.

Dorrett Campbell, director of communications at the Education Ministry, said this was as a result of an advisory from the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) that the island should still expect thunderstorms and heavy showers, which may lead to more flooding in sections of the island.

Ms. Campbell also said the Education Ministry had decided to use today to do further assessment and get the school plants ready for Monday when it is expected that schools will reopen.

The ODPEM reported that seven schools were being used as shelters. They are Yallahs Primary, Rosemount Junior High, Old Harbour High, Innswood High, Gwen Neal Basic School, Edith Dalton James High School and Halse Hall Basic School.

Mrs. Campbell said the schools may not be released until Tuesday. The director of communications said parents would be informed when these schools will reopen.
