WITH HURRICANE Wilma and her flood waters somewhat out of the way, racing resumes at Caymanas Park this afternoon with a pair of trophy events sponsored by the Jamaica Livestock Association (JLA).
Post time is high noon and fans deprived of Monday's Heroes Day holiday meet are expected to turn out at the Park and its Off-Track Betting (OTBs) parlours to see whether trainer Philip Feanny's two-year-old debutant, MYLEGACY, is as special as she's touted to be.
Following last Saturday's humbling of stablemates MINISTER ON FIRE and FIRE WORKS by rival trainer Wayne DaCosta's SUPER NATURAL in Race One of the Supreme Ventures Limited Two-Year-Old Series, pundits are keen to see the remaining juvenile arsenal in Feanny's barn.
MYLEGACY is a half-sister to this year's Derby and St. Leger winner MIRACLE MAN as well as top-class Feanny campaigner, HERECOMESFUDGIE.
DEBUTANT
Feanny's runner will debut in the 1100-metre co-feature Supreme Feeds Trophy for two-year-old maidens and untrieds to which JLA will put $135,000 to the $500,000 purse. The winning jockey and groom of the Supreme Feeds Trophy will also be rewarded with $10,000 each.
The company will also contribute $110,000 to the $500,000 JLA Trophy for Overnight Allowance runners in which DaCosta's EXCLUSIVE RUNNER is the horse to beat at a mile.
MYLEGACY has impressed at exercise, clocking 1:00.4 for five furlongs round, beating Richard Azan's speedy three-year-old, RAGING STORM.
Feanny's filly has most to fear from Noel Ennevor-trained WAR LEGEND, who should have debuted on Monday at 1300 metres.
WAR LEGEND is also moving well at exercise but doesn't appear to be as quick as MYLEGACY, who will be partnered by champion jockey Trevor Simpson.
Galloping five furlongs round earlier this month, WAR LEGEND was clocked in 1:02.0, much slower than MYLEGACY's 1:00.4. However, a week later he posted 1:00.1 from the gate out of the straight.
EXCLUSIVE RUNNER
DaCosta doesn't have a starter in the Supreme Feeds but holds the top hand in the JLA Trophy, for which EXCLUSIVE RUNNER looks primed after his flying second to EXPLOSIVE PEAK in the $1m Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) Imported Stakes a month ago.
The dark-bay four-year-old colt has been keeping far better company than his 10 rivals.
Toting a featherweight 48.0 kilos last time out, he was the railbirds' 5-2 favourite to beat speedy EXPLOSIVE PEAK but found the filly too hot to handle and had to settle for a storming second at 1400 metres.
In his previous race, EXCLUSIVE RUNNER had also come up short against quicker horses, closing into fifth behind ZICKWARTY and CHOSEN ONE at 1300 metres.
Stretched out at a mile with no wire-to-wire speed present, EXCLUSIVE RUNNER should revel in the milder pace and could be vying for the lead under Charles Hussey from as early as three furlongs out. DaCosta's runner has risen in the weights, down to carry 54.5 kilos, but should have no problems as he was even heavier when finishing a close third to back-to-form PITTACUS at 1400 metres late June.
Feanny's SWEET SOUTHERNGAL, who was caught stealing home by Derby runner-up AD INFINITUM two weeks ago, returns treated with lasix but will have to reverse almost three lengths EXCLUSIVE RUNNER had on her when finishing second in the CTL Imported Stakes.
