CHARLIE SMITH fought their way from the brink of elimination twice to beat Dunoon Technical 3-2
and advance to the second
round of the ISSA/Pepsi/JN Manning Cup second round yesterday.Playing in front of a good crowd at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, Charlie Smith were put under immense pressure when a defender's error gave Kemoy Telfer a first minute goal.
However, a blistering second half filled with high drama and moments of brilliance, saw the little Junglists levelling the score in the 52nd minute through a Michael Russell strike.
In a ding-dong affair, not for the weak at heart, Dunoon again went ahead from a Renee Lloyd goal in the 56th that looked to put destiny with a second round berth decidedly in the Rollington Town-based school's favour.
Lloyd, who was Dunoon's most outstanding player, dribbled by two players and from a wicked angle, curled a ball around Charlie Smith's custodian, Dervan Brown.
In yet another twist, Charlie Smith showed the guts of champions by first tying the game for a second time through their captain Craig Hunter in the 62nd minute, and then going ahead in the 66th from Russell's second goal of the evening.
Charlie Smith ensured qualification but were thwarted from a Walker Cup berth by Calabar, who dismantled Ardenne with a 5-0 victory to take top honours in Group 'B'.
