Gurney in high spirits
published: Sunday | October 23, 2005

Tesi Johnson, Gleaner Writer

ADVERTISING MOGUL, Gurney Beckford, O.D., celebrated with friends and family on Monday afternoon his Order of Distinction. The event was held at the Hilton Kingston Hotel. Well-wishers streamed into Les Ambassadeurs on the 18th floor to extend hearty congratulations to the honouree. Mr. Beckford, the consummate host, greeted all with an inviting smile and warm embrace.

Everyone was in high spirits, as they sipped on the mimosas and munched the delightful treats that were provided for the occasion; meanwhile, the musicians of Warm and Easy set the mood with favourites like Bob Marley's Jamming and Easy Skanking.

Naturally, many were itching to voice good wishes to the honouree, so his son Gavin Beckford soon got the ball rolling, but not before making light banter about his father's height. Speaking on behalf of his sister, he said, "If we are able to achieve even one-tenth of what he has, then we would be very proud of ourselves."

Also paying homage to the man of the hour was famed playwright Trevor Rhone. Mr. Rhone told stories of the history of his friendship with Mr. Beckford and in his usual poetic manner he said, "I wish the sun came out today, but I now realise that the sun didn't have to come out because so much warmth already surrounds you."

Janet Morrison, the creative director of Dunlop Corbin Communications, also demonstrated her lyrical prowess as she gave a poetic tribute to 'Mr. B', as she affectionately called him. She had the audience in stitches as she recounted Mr. Beckford's mannerisms which won him the love of all who crossed paths with him.

TOWER OF STRENGTH

A number of other persons also spoke in recognition of Mr. Beckford's achievements. Those included Bill Clarke, Sonia Folkes, John Kelly, Garth Moodie, Dr. John R. Kelly and Sandra Samuels. Ms. Samuels gave a particularly touching tribute, where she tearfully described Mr. Beckford as "her tower of strength." She also pointed out his willingness to make time to show concern for those around him. "For someone who is always so busy, you always find time to find out how one is doing," she said.

Also present to show support were Sandrea Falconer, Ed Wallace, Berl Francis, Trevor Rhone, Carolle Guntley, Minister Robert Pickersgill, Minister John Junor, Trevor McMillan, George Swire, Arnold Bertram, Wayne Ray and Lynette McDonald-Chin.
