Earthquake rattles island

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC:

AN EARTHQUAKE measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale rattled Trinidad yesterday, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The Seismic Research Unit of the University of the West Indies (UWI) said that the quake occurred at 5:20 a.m. local time on Monday about 75 kilometres (km) west of the capital, Port of Spain.

"The event was reportedly felt in the north-western region of Trinidad including Port of Spain, Santa Cruz, and Maracas Valley. The focal depth was approximately 116 km. The preliminary magnitude is 4.9."

Disaster officials here said preliminary reports indicate that there were no reports of injuries or damage to persons and property.
