LETTER OF THE DAY - People must pressure MPs for protection
published: Tuesday | October 25, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM totally horrified, sick to the stomach and deeply, deeply troubled by the state of Jamaica. Is there a war going on? Why have Jamaican men descended to such barbarism and utter disdain for life? Why can't they behave like human beings and stop the nonsense and leave God's people alone. If they are not human beings, they do not deserve to be called people.

The Government is responsible for national security and they have obviously abdicated their responsibility to the people of Jamaica. Where is the law and order? Where is the respect for life? Why aren't Jamaicans being given the respect due citizens of a country and being raped, fire-bombed, gunned down day after day? This kind of foolishness must stop or Jamaica is going to be a doomed place. It is incumbent on the people of Jamaica to take action now against this terrible evil that has taken over their land. It is time for some serious action.

My suggestion is that every man, boy and girl descend on their member of parliament's (MP) office in their constituency and demand they do something now or leave office. And, everyone who can write, start writing to the prime minister and their MPs until something is done. Keep vigils at Gordon House and other prominent places, or everyone will have to get a gun. But, we know that that is not going to work. So, what should be done? There is no outside help coming, so people had better stop being so complacent and start fighting this monster.

PACK UP, PHILLIPS

Peter Phillips, as Minister of National Security, should pack his bags and leave office as he has shown no leadership in keeping Jamaicans secure. Families who have lost loved ones in the debacle should all sue for lack of protection.

There is going to come a day when some Jamaican politicians are going to be charged for genocide, because they are wittingly or unwittingly allowing all this killing to be taking place for 25 years now and have done nothing about it. Lord have mercy on us.

I am, etc.,
