Good job by cops on cutting road deaths
published: Tuesday | October 25, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WOULD like to congratulate Senior Superintendent Elan Powel, head of the police traffic department, for his efforts in reducing the number of traffic fatalities on our roads.

According to police statistics, there are 31 fewer deaths from traffic accidents this year, when compared to the same period last year. This reduction in traffic accidents is attributed to the increase in the number and presence of traffic police on our roads. I must admit that I really do feel the presence of these policemen on our roads.

Driving on the roads now, you can almost be certain that there is a speed trap or spot check around the corner. This greater police presence on our roads forces motorists to obey the law and drive within the specified speed limits. Furthermore, the exorbitant traffic fines in this tough economic climate are certainly another deterrent to the various traffic offences.

However, given the success of the traffic division, we need to see similar results in the crime statistics. An increase in police presence in and around the volatile communities and garrisons will certainly restrict the number of criminal activities in our country.

I am, etc.,
