DEXTER ANDERSON, of Bellevue Primary and Junior High School, is the winner of The Gleaner's Children's Own Spelling Bee parish finals for Trelawny.

Dexter spelled the word I-N-F-L-A-M-M-A-B-L-E and burned up the competition to win after about an hour and 20 minutes of spelling.

"I couldn't believe I had won," he said later, explaining why he covered his face with his hands after being declared winner.

Dexter was presented with a certificate from Horace Porter of National Commercial Bank (NCB) for finishing as Champion Boy. He also received a pen from Neil Ramsay of NCB Insurance Company.

However, rain caused the postponement of the St. James Parish Finals of the competition on Wednesday. A new date is to be announced later.

FINALS POSTPONED

This is the second time this year that inclement weather has led to a change of schedule. The Clarendon, Kingston, St. Catherine and St. Andrew finals were all pushed back from October 31 to November 2 because of rains associated with Hurricane Wilma.

The top five spellers in Trelawny was completed by Champion Girl Danya-Kay Dixon, of Duncan's All-Age, who was second; Oshane Grant, of First Hill All-Age, who was third; Kijani Johnson, of Albert Town Primary, in fourth and Akeem Jarrett, finishing fifth. All 34 contestants were presented with items from Kraft and Bigga.
