Alternative energy sources

THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WOULD like to add my voice to the call by Mr. Anthony Gambrill, in the 'Letter of the Day' in the October 26 edition of your newspaper, for a national programme to encourage fuel conservation. This should be a national priority in the face of the rising fuel bill and the impact that it is having on the foreign exchange budget and on the economy on a whole.
Of course, conservation is more than just asking people to economise in their driving habits and in how they use their electrical appliances. On a national level, it would involve looking at alternative sources of energy, urban planning, use of other modes of transportation including rail, review of building codes, among other things. In the long run, I believe we will be forced into this mode, but the longer it takes, the more it will cost us.
I am, etc.,
