THE EDITOR, Sir:HAVING READ the responses of Mr. Jones and Kathryn Phipps to the comments of the Chief of Staff, Rear Admiral Lewin, I was extremely disappointed, especially with Kathryn Phipps.
I think that both of them are overreacting to the comments made by the chief of staff and allowed their emotions to get the better side of their judgement.
The chief of staff ought to have sound knowledge of his powers and responsibilities under the Jamaica Defence Force Act, and so needs no reminder.
His comments are quite ambiguous and one could ask him for clarification before taking his comments to task.
These persons are men and women of great prominence and one would assume that they would condemn in no uncertain terms the attack by criminal elements on any sector of the security forces in the lawful execution of their difficult and dangerous tasks at this time.
As Dr. Rattray pointed out in a recent commentary, criminals who operate well outside the law are becoming more and more brazen every day!
I would urge all Jamaicans to be united in the fight against criminal activities and to rid the country of all those who are still bent on destroying it, rather than worrying about the ambiguous comments of a decorated and respected army officer given in the heat of the moment.
I am, etc.,
