Smith delighted with ton
published: Saturday | October 29, 2005

WEST INDIES opening batsman Devon Smith said he was delighted with his 115 yesterday which led West Indies to 252 for three in response to Queensland's 323 in the warm-up game being contested at the Allan Border Oval.

"I'm really happy with today, I got a hundred but most importantly I think that we batted well as a team," Smith said after play yesterday.

"We want to build big partnerships throughout and we did that to some extent today," Smith said.

BATTING PITCH

"Even though the pitch was good for batting I tried to play every ball on merit and it worked out in the end for the team and me," the robust little left hander said.

"The outfield is fast and the bowlers stuck to their task but Chris (Gayle) and I pushed through, we really wanted to get a good opening stand on the board," continued Smith, who has been compared to former West Indies opener Roy Fredericks.

Gayle (58) and Smith added 130 for the first wicket while Ramnaresh Sarwan and Smith contributed 63 for the second wicket.

"I've been working with the coaches on my game a bit, trying to watch the ball closer and be more decisive in how I play and that seems to be working better and better," Smith said about his more forthright approach.

"We have a good foundation now and we still have some great batsmen there so we should look to get past the 323 and then put on as much as possible, get as much batting practice as possible," Smith reasoned.

The West Indies face Australia in a three-Test series commencing on November 3 at the Gabba.
