STEWART
FOLLOWING SHARP criticisms former Solid Waste Management Authority boss Alston Stewart has resigned, again.
The embattled Stewart exited his post as campaign manager for Finance Minister, and People's National Party presidential candidate, Dr. Omar Davies' 'Campaign for Prosperity' on Saturday.
In his resignation letter to Dr. Davies, Mr. Stewart attributed his exodus from the post of campaign manager to the workings of elements that refuse to put the Solid Waste issue to rest.
"Recent comments in certain sections of the media and by other individuals concerning my involvement in the 'Campaign for Prosperity' have indicated that there are persons who are determined to continue a smear campaign against me in respect of my stewardship at the National Solid Waste Management Authority," read the opening lines of the resignation missive addressed to 'Comrade Davies'.
On Sunday October 23, 2005, The Sunday Gleaner reported that after a five-month sabbatical, Mr. Stewart returned to his post as Dr. Davies' campaign chairman on October 1 of this year.
Dr. Davies told The Sunday Gleaner that due to the solid waste scandal that was broken by The Sunday Gleaner earlier this year, Mr. Stewart went on a mutually agreed hiatus until the smoke and the stink at the garbage collection agency dissipated.
Contrary to the views put forward by several political pundits, Mr. Stewart maintained that his involvement with Dr. Davies' campaign for leadership of both the country and the People's National Party (PNP) would not be a hindrance.
Now, the battle weary Stewart says it is doubtless that the negative views being put forward by the pundits "are and will be a continuing source of distraction from the focus of the 'Campaign for Prosperity' given my position of campaign manager."
