THE EDITOR, Sir:
THANK YOU for printing what was deservingly The Gleaner letter of the day, Friday October 28 - 'A 'Rosa Parks story' in which Sally Porteous tells the story of when, in 1965, she and her friend Miss Afro Jamaica 1965, Yvonne White, unsuspectingly jumped unto a New York bus only to sit in the hideous presence of beastly racism.
It's one of those stories which no one should miss, certainly not this avid Gleaner reader, as her triumphant declaration still echoes in my ears, "Come on, Yvonne, let's get a taxi. I wouldn't sit on this horrible bus if you paid me!" This is standing up for liberty!
I see more significance in Rosa Parks than that she died on my birthday. Here is a heroine who stood up for our civil rights, breaking up that segregation, inspiring us to fight for liberty on many a battlefield in this cold beastly world.
In our society, so similar to many others, we need to get rid of many things: political tribalism floods us with violence. Why should people be made to suffer simply because of the party they vote for?
Give me democracy over communism or somebody's version of theocracy any day! Whereas Martin Luther King shouted, "I have a dream," John is telling us all, he has a breathtaking vision. Look into it. (Revelation 13:16,17cf 14:12)
I am, etc.,
