August Town squeeze out narrow win
published: Monday | October 31, 2005

Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

AUGUST TOWN advanced to the second round of the Kingston & St. Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Western Union-sponsored Jackie Bell knockout competition with a scrappy 2-1 win over Greenwich Town at the University of the West Indies (UWI) playfield yesterday.

Goals from former Harbour View and Arnett Gardens premier league midfielder Daniel Shaw (29th minute) and Shawn Thomas (47th) handed August Town the victory in a lacklustre affair.

LONE GOAL

David Stultz scored Greenwich's lone goal in the 49th minute.

Christopher Ziadie, coach of August Town, believes weather affected both teams' preparation but welcomed the win nonetheless.

"A victory is always good, but you could see that it (lack of preparation) was taking it's toll on both teams. I don't think it was a very good game, but I'll take the win ... hard luck on Greenwich Town."

Greenwich Town's coach Lloyd Hall blamed his team's defeat on the referee.

"Every call went against Greenwich Town so I think the officiating was poor, poor, poor," Hall repeated.

"We are in a football country where football is developing, but we need to improve the officiating, it's very poor," he continued.

Hall said the flow of his team's game was also interrupted by the referee.

"Every time we have the ascendancy the referee find something to kill our flow, upset our rhythm," he concluded.

In other matches, Police National eliminated Real Mona with a 4-1 thumping, and Meadhaven finished with a comfortable 3-1 goal-margin over Barbican.
