St Ann by-election this month
published: Wednesday | November 2, 2005

OCHO RIOS, St. Ann:

AFTER SEVERAL months without representation in the St. Ann Parish Council, the people of the Alexandria division will go to the polls later this month to elect their new councillor.

Yesterday, Mayor of St. Ann's Bay, Delroy Giscombe, said that a by-election will be held in the division on November 24. He said nomination day will be on Monday, November 7. Mayor Giscombe said he has been in contact with the Electoral Office of Jamaica and that Director of Elections, Danville Walker, who has been made aware of the decision, and is already making the necessary preparations for the holding of the election.

The vacancy in the Alexandria division of Southwest St. Ann was created following the death of the councillor for the division, the Jamaica Labour Party's Derrick Frater on Saturday, July 2 earlier this year.

After the JLP went ahead earlier this year and selected businessman and former training instructor Winston McLeod as their candidate, the PNP has opted to select Mr. McLeod's niece as their candidate. She is Shirley Campbell, a housekeeping supervisor at Breezes Runaway Bay Hotel.

Mr. Frater died after a long illness and spent the last six months in and out of hospital during which time he was absent from the council on sick leave.
