LETTER OF THE DAY - Ja needs a new salvation party
published: Thursday | November 3, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

DELROY CHUCK, as an elected Member of Parliament, had no business convincing his readers that Jamaica was disintegrating. Instead, he should have proposed ways to stop that disintegration. Chuck's November 2 Gleaner column seemingly served no positive purpose. Why tell people who can see and hear it for themselves that it is raining?

Even the deaf and blind can see that the Jamaican society is disintegrating fast. It is an indictment first against the ruling PNP Government and the hapless leader, P.J. Patterson. However, the comatose JLP Opposition and its leaders must share the blame. Both major political parties have failed Jamaica during their various stints in Government and as opposition blocks. These MPs and ministers, including Delroy Chuck, should each declare a mea culpa and do something to redeem themselves and save our country or simply shut up and get out of politics.

Unfortunately for Jamaica, the chameleon politician Bruce Golding seems too 'wishy-washy' to offer Jamaicans a viable alternative to Patterson's failed Government. Golding has even complicated the matter more by abandoning and virtually wrecking what many saw as a hope.

What Jamaica needs now to reverse its path of disintegration is for conscientious politicians from both the JLP and PNP to quit their parties en bloc and form a new party to save Jamaica. For the new salvation party, only politicians who had no connection with such entities as 'Bulbie' Bennett's Clansman gang and the One Order thugs of Andem need apply. Mr. Chuck, it is time for proposing ideas on how to save Jamaica, not just to state the obvious that our country is dying.

I am etc.,
