Minister wants more involved parents
published: Thursday | November 3, 2005

Petrina Francis, Education Reporter

HENRY-WILSON

EDUCATION MINISTER, Maxine Henry-Wilson, has reiterated the call for parents to become more involved in their children's lives.

Mrs. Henry-Wilson made the call yesterday during the launch of 'Parent Month', organised by Coalition for Better Parenting.

While acknowledging that there are many parents who truly care for their children and will make the sacrifice to ensure that they get a good education, Mrs. Henry-Wilson lamented that there are still too many parents who do not view parenting as a responsibility.

"Men in particular refer to parenting as 'getting pickney' - which connotes ... an event which occurred without the active participation of the recipient or the passive victims," she said.

POOR PARENTING TO BLAME

"Poor parenting takes the blame for almost every negative occurrence - from absenteeism from school, antisocial behaviour to the high crime rate," the Education Minister stated.

"While we may not agree with each of these pronouncements, what they clearly indicate is the overwhelming importance of this responsibility for life parenting."

'Parent Month' is being held under the theme: 'Effective parenting: Key to stronger families, safe schools and communities'.

Speaking at the head offices of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture, Mrs. Henry-Wilson told the gathering that as part of the thrust for transformation, the ministry is forming a National Parent-Teacher Association with an aim to tighten the nexus between home and school. "As we have repeatedly confirmed, involved parents increase the potential of success for their children."

In her remarks, Merris Murray, executive director of the Early Childhood Commission, said effective parenting can mitigate devastating effects of poverty and build better families and communities.

Some of the highlights of 'Parent Month' include a national parent award ceremony, concerts, forum, parent information fair and workshops.
