15 hurt in refinery blaze
published: Tuesday | November 8, 2005

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP):

A FIRE has broken out at an oil refinery in eastern Venezuela, injuring 15 people, private broadcaster Globovision reported yesterday.

It was not clear what caused the fire at the crude distillation unit at the Cardon refinery.

Company officials were unavailable for immediate comment, and local fire department officials were unable to confirm the injuries.

The Cardon refinery, owned by Venezuelan state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela S.A., normally produces about 305,000 barrels a day.

Cardon is part of the Paraguana refining complex in eastern Venezuela that is the country's main source of gasoline exports, producing 940,000 barrels of oil a day.

Globovision said a fire broke out in the same part of the refinery on Oct. 16, leaving four injured.
