SANTA CRUZ, St. Elizabeth:
A MALE prisoner was found hanging in his cell at the Santa Cruz Police lock-up in St. Elizabeth yesterday morning.
He has been identified as 24-year-old Kemar Williams of Quickstep in the parish. At the time of his death, Williams was awaiting trial for charges of cruelty to animal.
His body was reportedly found by police officers at about 8:00 a.m., dangling from the roof with a piece of his pants around his neck, during a routine check of the cellblock.
The check was being conducted while the prisoners were having their baths.
The Gleaner was told that the Siloah Police detained Williams, who is believed to have been mentally challenged, on Sunday evening. He allegedly threatened to kill his parents after he severed the heads of their goats.
However he was transferred to the Santa Cruz jail due to a lack of cell facilities at Siloah.
A team from the St. Elizabeth and Area Three police is investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
