Policing and politics
published: Tuesday | November 8, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WRITE to express my admiration for and support of Superintendent Kenneth Wade. The ability of a policeman to come and boldly state what the public has known for a long time is laudable.

When the police go after criminals in areas supportive of the Opposition (e.g. Tivoli Gardens) they are accused of showing political bias. When they speak out against the connection (however tenuous) of the ruling party with criminal elements, they are also accused of being political. If the claims of both political parties are to be taken seriously, whose political agenda are the police serving?

WAKE UP

It is full time the citizens of this country wake up and realise that there will be no salvation from crime as long as we follow the current set of politicians. We must support the security services in their attempts to curb crime instead of allowing our opinions to be manipulated by the very politicians who give tacit support (or at least turning a blind eye) to the criminals supportive of their parties.

SHOW COURAGE

It is time for the media to show the necessary courage and resolve to pointedly discuss these issues and, where applicable, ask hard questions of our politicians, placing the necessary pressure on them to change. Superintendent Wade should know that there are many people in the society who support the actions of himself and his fellow officers. We are fully cognisant that they are the only thing between us and the gunmen, while some politicians give meaningless speeches about tackling crime.

I am, etc.,
