... Montpelier escapee caught
published: Wednesday | November 9, 2005

A HAITIAN male who was among a group of 45 inmates who escaped from Montpelier in St. James, has been recaptured and is now at the Port Antonio police station in Portland.

The inmate who has been identified as Folex Colages, is scheduled to appear in the Port Antonio Resident Magistrate's Court tomorrow, to answer to the charge of illegal entry.

Inspector of police in Port Antonio, Wilfred Penn, said that the Haitian had been scheduled for departure back to his homeland of Haiti, when he made his escape along with 44 other inmates.

"He was also denied political asylum," said Mr. Penn. "Mr. Colages was among a batch of more than 200 Haitians who were transferred from the Winnifred Rest Home Shelter, at Fairy Hill, in the parish to Montpelier, more than four months ago."

CAPTURED IN SPOT CHECK

Mr. Penn said the Haitian was captured during a routine spot check conducted by the police in the Orange Bay area, aboard a taxi destined for Port Antonio.

"He was probably making his way back to the Fairy Hill area, as he had made friends with local residents in that area," Mr. Penn added.

Mr. Penn pointed out that the police will be seeking a deportation order from the court for Mr. Colages, but indicated that the man could instead be transported back to Montpelier from where he had initially escaped.
