St Mary drains still in need of repair
published: Monday | November 14, 2005

PORT MARIA, St. Mary:

A HEALTH report delivered by Chief Public Health Inspector Anthony Robins and Dr. San San Win at last Thursday's St. Mary Parish Council meeting revealed that some drains were still in need of urgent attention.

The report stated that even though the parish had embarked on a drain-cleaning exercise, it was inadequate.

Mr. Robins also made the point that the mosquito eradication exercise had been stalled due to the continuous rains. He added that even though mosquito infestation was not major problem at this time, the factors were right for an outbreak.

On the subject of leptospirosis, Dr. San San Win revealed that during the period July - October, 13 suspected cases of leptospirosis were reported. He said that the The Ministry of Health had announced the implementation of a rodent control programme. He advised householders to take precautionary measures.

On other issues, Mr. Robins said that the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) was in the process of putting together a proposal for making markets more environmentally-friendly and hygienic.
