Long Pond cane chief blasts PM
published: Tuesday | November 15, 2005

DELROY ANDERSON, president of the Long Pond Cane Farmers' Association, says Prime Minister P.J. Patterson has 'betrayed' Trelawny cane farmers by recommending the closure of the Long Pond Sugar Factory, knowing that with more time, the factory could be rationalised.

"Sugar cane is the only thing that God has given us in northern Trelawny and I do not know where the Prime Minister got his mathematics, but he needs to go back and do his homework," Mr. Anderson told The Gleaner last week. "The farmers are still waiting to meet with him on the matter."

Citing betrayal on the part of the Prime Minister, Mr. Anderson suggested that the proposal to shut down the factory in two years be revisited in order to secure the lot of thousands of workers in the industry.
