Save Jacks Hill
published: Tuesday | November 15, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

JACKS HILL village is the most perfect place in the Corporate Area to reside. It is a little piece of the 'country' high in the hills and five minutes away from Papine and Barbican squares. This 'Shangri-la' is occupied by local farmers and middle class Jamaicans with no persons of influence residing in the area.

This has not always been so. As I am reliably informed, many many years ago a prominent politician resided in our midst and the roads were then in perfect order. More recently, during my time on the 'hill', another young politician on his way up lived in the community and the roads were not all bad then.

Recently, however, a combination of factors has caused such deterioration that we can no longer joke about the matter as we are in imminent danger of being isolated from Kingston and the rest of Jamaica, and life and limb are being risked daily in trying to negotiate the roads.

'Emily' and 'Dennis' left the residents of Jacks Hill marooned, and after the roads had been cleared it was seen that both the Jacks Hill and the Skyline roads, the only means of accessing the area, had 'breakaways' leaving a single lane of drivable road which another heavy downpour would completely cut away. This happened in July and to date no move has been made to rectify the situation.

I am pleading with the Government to please use some of our taxes to fix our roads and thereby save the Jacks Hill community from isolation except by foot or helicopter.

I am, etc.,

L. LAWSON DOUGLAS

St. Andrew
