Cavalier face the might of Arnett
published: Wednesday | November 16, 2005

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

WHEN CAVALIER travel to the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex for their third-round Western Union/KSAFA Jackie Bell encounter with Arnett Gardens today it might not be the most mouth-watering clash on paper, but it could be the richest in history.

As the top Corporate Area knockout competition gets into high gear, six other interesting match-ups are slated as National Premier League (NPL) teams tackle sides from the lower divisions.

Tivoli Gardens host Super League outfit Mountain View United at the Edward Seaga Stadium at 5:00 p.m. Syd Bartlett campaigners UTech welcome Super Leaguers Maverley/Hughenden at 3:00.

Last year's beaten Super League finalists Bull Bay tackle NPL strugglers Constant Spring at Bull Pen at 3:00 p.m.; the JDF will try to ambush Boys' Town at Up Park Camp; at 3:00 Super League team August Town take on NPL leaders Harbour View at the UWI Bowl at 3:00, while Super League outfit Meadhaven United tackle Waterhouse at Maverley Ground at 3:00 p.m.

Cavalier or 'Duncan Destroyers', as they are known after their former coach, Leighton Duncan, were one of the top teams in Jamaica for a long while before sliding down the ladder.

Now they are campaigning in the Major League, two leagues below the top division and a return to the top flight could start today with a victory over top ranked Arnett Gardens.

EPIC BATTLES

Over the years both teams were involved in some epic battles and today could be no different.

Cavalier have been unbeaten in all competitions this season and with Demetri Billet, Jermaine Rowe, Bernard Blackwood, Ricardo Burke, Everdean Scarlett, Dwayne Thomp-son and Jermaine Campbell an upset is not beyond them.

However, Arnett Gardens, the defending champions, must be favoured to advance after having a good start to the NPL season culminating with a 2-1 victory over Harbour View in the first end-of-round final.

Although Arnett might be without Jonathan Williams and Jermaine Benjamin through injuries, top striker Kevin 'Pele' Wilson and Cornel Chin-Sue through suspension, they are expected to name a powerful enough side to overcome Cavalier.
