We are still good people
published: Thursday | November 17, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WRITE to highlight the caring attitude of some Jamaicans and to express my gratitude to some persons who were generous to my son.

My 18-year-old son attends a tertiary institution in the Papine area. On his homeward bound journey recently, he took a bus from downtown which terminates in May Pen, but usually travels via Old Harbour Road, my son's destination. At the start of the journey, he was not informed that the bus would be travelling on the toll road, thereby bypassing Spanish Town and Old Harbour Road, presumably because of disruptions that were taking place in Spanish Town.

On realising what was happening, (he was now close to May Pen), he alerted the conductor and called me from his cellphone. Naturally, I was concerned because I knew he had no money for the return journey. On learning of his plight, several passengers contributed to his fare to the extent that he had to respectfully refuse the excess amount.

To 'Face' of Rising Star, who not only gave him money, but ensured that he was put on another bus; to the conductor who took no fare from him to travel to May Pen and to all the other persons who contributed, a big thank you to you all. I am convinced that we are the best and in the midst of all the negativity that is taking place in our country, the majority of us are good people.

I am, etc.,

BARBARA HEW
