THE EDITOR, Sir:
HAVING RECENTLY enjoyed the publication of former Prime Minister Hugh Shearer's biography, well written by my favourite columnist Hartley Neita, I have been enquiring about research work and publications on our other prime ministers.
I am aware of Rachel Manley's books on her father Michael, and grandfather Norman, and also have come across two books on Bustamante. The Bustamante literature includes a compilation of interesting letters written to The Gleaner editor during the 1930s and 1940s, but I believe this is out of print.
Arnold Bertram has also written an interesting, but somewhat premature biography of present Prime Minister, P.J. Patterson. Missing is any such work on Sir Donald Sangster, public servant for many years, acting prime minister for several, and short-lived (six weeks I believe), prime minister. We also eagerly await Mr. Seaga's autobiography.
The importance of documentation on the lives and contributions of our prime ministers will help to shape the public perceptions of their legacies. Mr. Sangster's book cannot be too late. Perhaps Mr. Neita would also consider taking on that challenge.
I am, etc.,
ENID LAWSON (Mrs.)
