Cavalier upset Arnett
published: Thursday | November 17, 2005

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

A NEW Western Union/KSAFA Jackie Bell champion will be crowned after Cavalier scored a gigantic 2-1 upset win over defending champions Arnett Gardens at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex yesterday.

Goals by Ricardo Burke in the 19th minute and Demetri Billet in the 52nd - a former Arnett Gardens player - propelled Cavalier, who play two divisions lower, to their massive win.

Patrick Graham converted a 56th penalty to briefly give the home team a glimmer of hope. Cavalier, though not matching Arnett Gardens stride-for-stride, were not overawed by the occasion and played with conviction and self belief.

Rudolph Speid, player/coach of Cavaliers, said his team "is rebuilding and this win is the basis to rebuild the club and take it back to where it was."

"We have quality players and we knew that if Arnett didn't come and play at their best we would have a good chance to beat them," added Speid.

Losing coach Jerome Waite said: "As the defending champions and to be going out after playing the first game is a disappointment.

A GENERAL FAILURE

"The team didn't play well. We created chances and didn't put them away. It was a general failure of the team," he said.

At Up Park Camp, former national coach Carl Brown and Andrew Price provided a twin coaching attack as they bellowed Boys' Town to a comfortably 3-0 win over Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).

Brown, absent from the local scene for some time, made a welcome return to his beloved club, marshalling the troops from the sideline to the satisfaction of the Boys' Town faithful.

DOUBLE STRIKE

Former national Under-20 player, Michael Campbell score twice, in the 36th and 90th minutes, but was somewhat overshadowed by strike partner Fitzroy Anglin's beauty in the 53rd minute.

Anglin, the most senior player on the team, rifled in a swerving, dipping 25-metre shot that flew past JDF custodian Patrick McCalla and nestled in the back of the net.

Last year's beaten finalists Tivoli Gardens registered the most impressive victory, thrashing Mountain View United 5-0 at the Edward Seaga Stadium.

Nicholas McCreath scored twice and was ably supported by Christopher Nicholas, Jameel Thompson and Carlton Young.

It took an extra-time goal by Oneil Smith to lift Harbour View to a hard-fought 1-0 win over August Town at the UWI Bowl.

Over at Maverley Ground, Waterhouse, courtesy of goals from Keion Clunis, Demar Phillips and an own goal, defeated Meadhaven United 3-0.

Meanwhile, struggling NPL outfit Constant Spring edged last year's beaten Super League finalists Bull Bay 1-0 at the Bull Pen.

Today, Elleston Flats host Police National at the UWI Bowl at 3:00 p.m.
