Champs Glenmuir blank Bog Walk
published: Thursday | November 17, 2005

Adrian Frater, News Editor

WESTERN BUREAU:

ON AN afternoon which saw a spate of goals, champions Glenmuir High School were among the eight teams that earned qualification for the quarter-final round of the 2005 ISSA/Pepsi/Jamaica National daCosta Cup yesterday when they blanked Bog Walk 2-0 to top Group Five of the inter-zone round.

The other qualifiers were Group One winners Godfrey Stewart, who hammered Grange Hill to top the group on goal difference over Cornwall College; Mannings, who drew 0-0 with Frome Technical to win Group Two; Clarendon College, who pounded Spaldings 5-1 to win Group Three; Decarteret College, who drew 1-1 with Munro to top Group Four; and Happy Grove, who blanked Tacky 4-0. Cornwall College and Munro College also qualified by virtue of being the two best second-place finishers.

In the big Group One clash at Jarrett Park between Cornwall College and Cedric Titus, which both needed to win to be in with a chance of making the quarter-finals, it turned out to be a goal feast for the former as goals from Oshani Morris, Francois Anderson, Edward Campbell, Richard Edmondson and substitute Cedric Daley gave them a big 5-1 win. Cedric Titus's lone goal came from Devroy Leslie (penalty).

However, despite their win, there was some amount of disappointment in the Cornwall College camp as, according to coach Dr. Dean Weatherley, the plan was to win the group and cop one of the automatic qualifying slots. He was nonetheless quite happy that he had still earned qualification.

"We were hoping to win the zone and I believe we got enough chances to do so," said

Weatherley, whose team was edged out on goal-difference by a mere one goal by Godfrey Stewart, said, "The players were a little too anxious today and it really affected our finishing. However, we can't be too hard on them as they got five goals."

After being denied by resolute defending in the early stages by the Cedric Titus team, Cornwall finally broke through in the 28th minute. During an assault on their opponent's goal, the overlapping Morris got a clear opportunity and fired home a fierce grounder, making the score 1-0.

NEAT DRIBBLE

With Cedric Titus offering only token resistance and looking quite tame, Cornwall College went further ahead in the 45th minute. Following a neat dribble into Cedric Titus' goal area, Anderson fired off a crisp grounder which flashed passed goalkeeper Andre Dawkins, making the half-time score 2-0.

The second half saw more Cornwall College dominance as they went goal hunting. In the 62nd minute, Campbell pounced on a cross from Anderson and crashed home, making the score 3-0. Six minute later, Edmondson swept upon a lofted corner and nodded in to make it 4-0.

On one of their rare attacks in the 84th minute, Cedric Titus were awarded a penalty when Leslie was fouled just outside Cornwall College's goal area. He got up and make no mistake from the spot, making the score 4-1. However, the Montego Bay team was to have the last laugh when substitute Daley broke free before the Cedric Titus goal and finished on target, making the final score 5-1.
