Johnson-Sirleaf declared president-elect
MONROVIA, (Reuters): FORMER FINANCE Minister, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, won Liberia's presidential run-off, beco ming the first woman to be elected head of state of an African country, the National Elections Commission (NEC) said yesterday.

Merkel makes first foreign trip - to Paris
PARIS (AP): ANGELA MERKEL made Paris her first foreign stop as German Chancellor yesterday, sending a message of continuity in her country's close ties with France at the heart of the European Union.
