Jamaica should stop moaning about sugar
published: Thursday | November 24, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I read with interest the concerns about the sugar industry in Jamaica. I believe we need in this century to stop moaning about sugar and start thinking about replacements.

In this century, small countries like Jamaica are not important for primary produce. Brazil will outproduce us easily and Europe will look to other places.

USE HUMAN RESOURCES

In England, Guyanese sugar can be found on supermarket shelves more easily than Jamaican sugar. Human resources and our ability to prepare Jamaicans for a global economy dictated by Chinese consumption habits are crucial. I only need to show you the example of Singapore and even the Cayman Islands. They use mostly their human resources to create jobs in offshore banking and technology. Updating the education of our young Jamaicans is a high priority.

I am, etc.,
