New university launches operations today
published: Thursday | November 24, 2005

THE INTERNATIONAL University of the Caribbean (IUC), which is offering tertiary education in Jamaica, will be officially launched today.

The IUC is made up of three entities, Knox Community College, Mel Nathan College, and the Institute of Theological and Leadership Development.

According to Dr. the Reverend Maitland Evans, president of the IUC, the emergent university has been described as "an institution whose time has come", as it seeks to establish exceptional standards of student support and academic behaviour.

COMMITMENT TO PEACE

The university will also be characterised by an overarching commitment to a peace agenda, which will see ongoing research into peace strategies and initiatives through its downtown campus.

In addition, students will be educated in conflict resolution, and a holistic understanding of peace.

"This focus is a means of addressing the growing challenge of crime and violence in Caribbean communities," Dr. Evans said.

He said international partnerships will be strengthened in order to create a dynamic balance between thorough engagement within a Caribbean context and a deep understanding of the global arena.

The IUC is operated by the United Church in Jamaica and has campuses in Mandeville, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Port Antonio, Kingston and Grand Cayman.
