WESTERN BUREAU:

ON AN afternoon when champions Glenmuir's 17-game winning streak came to an end with a 1-1 draw against Godfrey Stewart in their Group One quarter-final daCosta Cup fixture at St. Elizabeth Technical High School, Cornwall College stormed back into contention in the group with a 7-0 spanking of Munro College at Jarrett Park.

With just one round of quarter-final games to go to decide the two semi-finalists from the group, Glenmuir and Godfrey Stewart are locked atop the standings on four points each with Cornwall College one point behind. Munro, who have lost both of their games, have no chance of advancing.

TEAMS TIED

In Group Two, Clarendon College clipped Decarteret College 1-0, which leaves both teams tied on three points each atop the standings. Mannings also kept their semi-final aspirations intact with a 2-2 draw with Happy Grove which lifted them to two points. Happy Grove, on one point, appears to be on their way out.

In the Jarrett Park goal spree, resolute Cornwall College got their goals through Edward Campbell (two), Richard Edmondson (two), Cedric Daley, Nakia Atkinson and Andre Lee. They led 3-0 at the half-time break.

SATISFIED

"We came here looking to score at least five goals and we got seven so we are pretty satisfied with the result," said winning coach Dean Weatherley. "We are hoping that our goal-scoring form will spill over into Saturday's crucial game against Godfrey Stewart."

The Cornwall College team started out quite businesslike and it was no surprise when they took the lead in the sixth minute. On an assault on the Munro goal, Daley rose high above a group of defenders and nodded passed goalkeeper Errol Reid, who was injured and had to be replaced, which made the score 1-0.

Cornwall increased their lead when they scored back-to-back goals in the 22nd and 23rd minutes. First, Campbell waltzed past three defenders and fired a fierce grounder by substitute goalkeeper Lindel McBean. Seconds later, Edmondson controlled on the edge of the area and booted home easily, making the half-time score 3-0.

STOPPED IN THEIR TRACKS

In the second half, Munro came battling back but they were stopped in their tracks when Cornwall struck again in the 68th minute. Andre Lee clipped a neat pass into the path of Edwards and he calmly fired passed the advancing goalkeeper, making the score 4-0.

Edmondson made it 5-0 in the 72nd minute when he took another fine pass from Lee and fired past the 'keeper. The robust Atkinson added his name to the scoresheet in the 81st minute when his fabulous long-range shot gave the goalkeeper no chance, making the score 6-0.

With time ticking away in the game, Lee ended the rout in the 90th minute when he pouncd on a rebound from the goalkeeper and booted home calmly, making the final score 7-0.
