Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) retains St Ann Parish Council seat
published: Friday | November 25, 2005

Devon Evans, Gleaner Writer

ALEXANDRIA, St. Ann:

BUSINESSMAN GILBERT 'Winston' McLeod of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) swept to victory by a clear margin yesterday in the by-election for the parish council seat in the Alexandria division of the South West St. Ann constituency.

He polled 2,021 votes to defeat the People's National Party (PNP) candidate, his niece, Shirley Campbell, a housekeeping supervisor, by 559 votes.

The by-election was held to fill the vacancy created by the death, earlier this year, of the former councillor for the division, Derrick Frater. After the results were announced, Bruce Golding, JLP leader, led the pot-clanging Labourites on a victory march to the JLP office about 500 metres outside the Alexandria square, snarling traffic for several minutes.
