A section of the barracks at the Mount Salem Police Station in St. James where Corporal Waite was injured.Speaking to The Sunday Gleaner yesterday, Corporal Grantley Waite's discomfort was obvious. In a state of paralysis from the neck down and wearing a neck brace, he spoke only to return the reporter's greetings and politely ask that questions be directed to the Half-Way Tree Police Station.
The 30-year veteran of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, reportedly a victim of mistaken identity, was plainly tired. He was transferred to St. Joseph's hospital yesterday morning from nearby Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) and then back to KPH later in the afternoon.
And this morning, his friend said yesterday, he is to be sent back to St. Joseph's for an operation. His doctors at both hospitals were unavailable for comment on his medical status.
"The doctor said he is going to try his best, but not to expect too much," his friend told The Sunday Gleaner.
"I wouldn't have expected this to happen to Waite," she added, shaking her head. "He's a very quiet man, a good police."
