THE NEW Harry Potter film remained the top choice for North American moviegoers during the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday weekend, while the family comedy Yours, Mine & Ours was the best performer among the five newcomers, according to studio estimates issued yesterday.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire sold about US$54.9 million worth of tickets in the three days beginning Friday, taking its 10-day haul to US$201.1 million, far outpacing the performance of the three previous adaptations of author J.K. Rowling's wizard series.
Yours, Mine & Ours, a remake of an old Lucille Ball-Henry Fonda blended-family comedy, opened at number three with US$17.5 million for the weekend, and US$24.5 million since opening on Wednesday, in line with industry expectations.
In between, was the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, which held at number two in its second weekend with US$19.7 million. After 10 days, it has earned US$54.7 million.
The musical adaptation of the Broadway hit Rent opened at number five with US$10.7 million, and US$18.1 million since Wednesday - below expectations of a US$20 million - US$25 million range during the five-day period.
The romantic comedy Just Friends opened at number six with US$9.3 million, and US$13.6 million since Wednesday.
Bringing up the rear were In the Mix, the theatrical headlining debut of R&B star Usher, at number nine with US$4.5 million; and the black comedy The Ice Harvest, starring Billy Bob Thornton and John Cusack, at number 10 with US$3.7 million, tying with Zathura.
