More parental input needed

THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WRITE in response to the Letter of the Day November 24. I am a parent of a grade 5 student who attends a preparatory school in St Ann. My child started at this school in January of this year. Parents of my child's class were recently invited to a meeting with the principal and the class teacher. Out of 15 students only 5 of their parents attended. We were told at this meeting that the chidren were not of a grade 5 standard, that they were poor in language arts, and that most of them had simply not understood the basic concepts of maths.
I have to echo Ms. Thompson-Dunkley's sentiments - how does this happen? How have these children been allowed to get lost in the system? Whose fault is it? As important as the question "how did this happen?" is the more pressing question "what are we (parents, teachers, principals, government) going to do about it?". We are collectively responsible and we must collectively ensure that no child is left behind, no matter their ability.
I am, etc.,
