SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:
GOALS BY Anthony Modeste and Omar Daley carried Portmore United to a 2-0 win over Rivoli United Football Club in a rescheduled Wray and Nephew National Premier League encounter at Spanish Town Prison Oval late yesterday evening.
The match, which was played before a packed Prison Oval under the watchful eyes of several police and military personnel, saw both teams playing a kick-and-run brand of football and neither could score in the first half.
HANDLED BALL
In the 67th minute of play, Derrick Planter handled the ball and a penalty was awarded by referee Courtney Campbell, which Modeste converted, making it 1-0.
Daley, left unmarked in the 18-yard box, let fly a vicious left-footer that beat the Rivoli custodian, making it 2-0 in the 73rd minute.
Rivoli netted two goals, both coming from the boots of national player Garfield Reid late in the match. However, both goals were waved offside by the referee.
The coach of Rivoli, Anthony Thompson, said they will still have to go back to the drawing board and come again.
"We did not play well and we lost. As a result we will have to go back and plan for the next match against Arnett Gardens."
Desmond 'Gadaffi' Smith of Portmore's coaching staff was elated.
He said: "When you play disciplined football then you will win. It's only if you are playing a better team than yourself then you might lose the match.
"We are thankful for this result, and will move forward more purposefully."
The result catapulted Portmore from fourth to second on 26 points, 13 shy of leaders Harbour View. Rivoli remained 10th on 12 points. In the Under-21 encounter, Portmore won 2-1.
