Be very cautious Jamaica
published: Thursday | December 1, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IN RESPONSE to the Spanish Ambassador Jesus Silva's remarks, "do not fear the Spanish Invaders", one just needs to take a look at what they have done with their own country in the Costa Del Sol - what was once a Mediterranean marvel, is now just one mass of concrete and sewage treatment plants.

In reference to the creation of the 15,000 jobs directly, he is correct with the numbers, but the majority of these workers will be employed at less than $3,000 per week and most are at present without union representation. Is this not economic slavery?

I would be very cautious of the consequences we would encounter in the long term, as a result of their impact on the environment, and their workers' self-esteem.

I am, etc.,
