SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:

THE POLICE yesterday used front-end loaders and other heavy-duty equipment to clear sections of St. Johns Road, Spanish Town, that were blocked by residents protesting the fatal shooting of Everette Laing, a 20-year-old resident of the area.

The residents used wood, iron, old car parts, and even lit fires on sections of the road bordering Feather Bed Lane and 76 St. Johns Road. This resulted in the diversion of traffic going to Kitson Town and its environs. According to the residents, Mr. Laing was killed in cold blood.

However, police reports are that about 11:50 a.m., a police party went to an area known as 'Crossroad' on St. Johns Road, after receiving information that gunmen were in a bar. On their arrival, they shouted, "Police," and were shot at by Laing. They said the six other men who were with Laing ran, after he was shot in the cross fire.

The Bureau of Special Investigation is probing the matter.
