THE EDITOR, Sir:
THERE IS a new day and a new dawn under newly appointed Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas.
This commissioner is up-front and very personal when he says he is, and will be, getting rid of some of the recalcitrants/rogues and wrongdoers in the police force.
He goes around to the various police stations and, apart from giving the usual pep talk to the rank and file, he pulls no punches when he tells them "there are thieves and rogues amongst us" and he is not only talking about the young rookie cop from training school who feels the police department is a get rich scheme/job so he is going to supplement his meagre salary with shakedowns, etc.
In his initial getting-to-know-you speech, I can remember when he lambasted gazetted officers for being in bed with criminals; he was not covering his mouth. This commissioner spent years at Special Branch and he knows what is going on.
I am all for capitalism and free enterprise, but people should learn to live within their means. Some of these young policemen need some serious counselling before they leave the Police Academy.
They are thrown to the wolves after coming from the deepest part of some country bush and have to cope with the so-called fast life in the big city.
I am, etc.,
