Custom costs killing us
published: Saturday | December 3, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM calling on the Government of Jamaica to start putting plans in place to encourage Jamaican citizens abroad to come back and invest in the island. But the overhead costs alone at the port are killing us.
As a young man who is just 32 years old, born in Jamaica and now living in England, I have set up a recording company in Jamaica, giving something back to my country to help young talented youths.

I bring back equipment into the country to set up my business which is going to provide employment for Jamaicans and also generate revenue for the island, and customs wants an arm and a leg.

Don't get me wrong, because there will be people who want to play the system, but as long as an individual has proof that the equipment is for setting up business here there should be at the most a five per cent duty.

There are people overseas who would like to go back to Jamaica and invest but the overhead costs are killing us.

I am, etc.,
