Expletives on the air
published: Saturday | December 3, 2005

The Editor, Sir:

IS THE Broadcasting Commission asleep, or officially dead?

Unless I'm a bit behind the times, it is not acceptable for television stations, TVJ and CVM in particular, to be broadcasting expletives during live or recorded local football matches.

The latest incident to my mind was the football match between Portmore United and Harbour View which was carried shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 30. Members of the crowd could be heard continually cursing 'BCs' throughout the broadcast.

CVM is no different. A couple months ago a fake-accent 'Jamaican' in a U.S. movie belted out a BC at about 11 o'clock one Saturday night.

The programme ratings implemented recently have no effect if G means as many expletives as XXX. Clearly, the broadcasting facilities on location need to be insulated from crowd noises. We need to protect our children.

I am, etc.,

A.A. WRIGHT

Kingston
